Sophia Gallo

Artist's Statement

I am Sophia Gallo, a Brooklyn raised fine artist and printmaker who uses bold color and draws inspiration from city settings, the visual style of vintage comics and the bold nature of street art.

Formal art education always made me feel as though there was a tension between the different kinds of images I make. One being more observational, narrative, on the edge of surreal but bound to realism. The other is more experimental, employing patterns, expansive spaces, favoring objects and animals, and symbolism over direct representation. After giving it thought and taking a break I felt inspired to create, observing my surroundings, appreciating my experiences and giving life to images born purely from my imagination. These drawings drift back and forth between both styles with the drawing "Aspirations" as the culmination of my reflection, representing my most self assured artistic identity, all facets existing in stylistic harmony.
